Electric Wharf Footbridge

Electric Wharf Footbridge

The Electric Wharf Footbridge which has a span of 30 metres across the Coventry Canal and was completed in August 2006.

The bridge's deck has a single curve that combines the main span and the approach ramps into a horseshoe shape in plan. As the bridge deck crosses the canal it is suspended from a steel arch that has a triangular cross-section that skews along its length.

The bridge deck was made up of painted steel channels and angles, with the deck itself made from galvanised perforated deck panels. The balustrade incorporated lighting to illuminate the bridge deck and was topped with a stainless steel tubular handrail.

British Waterways insisted that the canal should be kept open for as much of the construction as possible, with closures limited to just half an hour at a time. This meant that the arch and bridge deck were assembled adjacent to the canal, then lifted into position in one piece.
